Mark Forsyth’s The Elements of Eloquence explores the figures of rhetoric, divulging tricks used by the Ancient Greeks to Katy Perry, showing that certain phrases – like ‘Bond, James Bond’ – are effective because it’s not what you say, but how you say it.
Do you have what it takes to write eloquently? Have a go at using three kinds of rhetoric: Hypophora, Syllepsis and Diacope to write and submit a short poem (less than 150 words) to us by Monday 9th December (9am GMT). We’ll post some of the entries here on Tumblr throughout the competition - so look out for yours!
Mark Forsyth will judge the best use of rhetoric and one lucky poet will win a signed copy of The Elements of Eloquence: How to Turn the Perfect English Phrase plus a set of Shakespeare Fridge Poetry, and one runner up will also win a set of fridge poetry.
